Genie came back from the body shop with a tear in the driver’s seat. So, the techs came out to my house this morning to replace the seat bottom. They pulled the cover in one piece off the cushion material. I thought it was interesting.

The holes in the foam are to channel the air from the fan for cooling or heating the seat. The tech told me that airflow diminishes over time as the foam breaks down with wear.

The new cover with the old one on top of it is on the right. The holes in the cushion for air flow are shown left.

How’d they get the bottom of the seat off?

I didn’t see the entire process, but the seat cover piece has these thin metal rods that attach to the upholstery along the edges using those little clamps you see in the first picture by the red pliers. The tech clamps them to the material and stretches it over the cushion. Then (this is the part where I take an intuitive leap because I didn’t see it go in), they must clamp those rods to ones on the metal seat frame. So, I’m guessing to get the seat off, they go in with pliers and pry off the old rings to release it.

Yeah. Guess that’s why they pay the big boys to do it? At least it’s easier than having to hand-sew individual leather panels into the seat on site, which I had feared at first.

I see this process every day. Typically the leather cover is held onto the frame of the seat with plastic clips, metal listings, and hog rings. Depending on the vehicle, you may have to pull the whole seat to remove the cover.

Wondered if you’d pop in. Yes, the tech told me that they sometimes have to pull the seat, but not in this model. Good, because that meant it took less time. He also told me the wrinkles would go away, but I already knew that because of you.
